• In 2011, there were 19,850 spas in the U.S., a slight decline of 0.4 percent compared to the previous year.
• In 2010, there were 19,900 spas in the U.S., a slight decline of 3.3 percent compared to the previous year. 
• In 2009, there were 20,600 spas.
• Over a decade, the number of spa locations has grown from 4,140 in 1999 to 19,900 in 2010.

SPA VISITS

• In 2011, there were 156 million spa visits in the U.S., an increase of 4.1percent compared to the previous year.
• In 2010, there were 150 million spa visits in the U.S., an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year. 
• In 2009, there were 143 million spa visits.
• Over a decade, the number of spa visits has grown from 90.7 million in 1999 to 150 million in 2010.

REVENUE

• In 2011, $13.4 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the previous year.
• In 2010, $12.8 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry, an increase of 4.3 percent compared to the previous year. 
• In 2009, $12.3 billion of revenue was generated by the U.S. spa industry.
• Over a decade, the amount of spa revenue has grown from $5 billion in 1999 to $12.8 billion in 2010.

EMPLOYMENT

• 2012: In May 2012, there were 339,400 total employees. The total was comprised of 163,100 full-time employees (a nine percent increase), 128,500 part-time employees, and 47,800 contract employees.
• 2011: In May 2011, there were 338,600 total employees, an increase of two percent compared to the previous year. The total was comprised of 149,200 full-time employees (an eight percent increase), 134,200 part-time employees (a decrease of 2.2 percent) and 55,200 contract employees (a 2.8 percent decrease).
• 2010: In May 2010, there were 332,000 total employees. The total was comprised of 138,100 full-time employees, 137,200 part-time employees and 56,800 contract employees.
• 2009: In March 2009, there were 340,000 total employees. The total was comprised of 158,200 full-time employees, 112,300 part-time employees and 70,100 contract employees.
• 1999: Over a decade, the number of spa industry employees has grown from 151,000 in 1999 to 338,600 in May 2011.
