Deborah Szekely - Mind

Deborah Szekely Headshot

Deborah Szekely is known as the founding "godmother" of the mind, body and fitness movement. In 1940, Ms. Szekely and her late husband, Edmond Szekely, founded Rancho La Puerta in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico, one of the first destination spas. In 1958, she alone established the Golden Door, in Escondido, CA. With both spas firmly established, she helped to forge the fitness spa as a major service industry.

In addition to her talents as a successful entrepreneur, Deborah Szekely has devoted her life to public service. Ms. Szekely founded Eureka Communities in 1991, a national leadership training program for CEOs of nonprofit organizations.

Ms. Szekely was awarded the inaugural Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award by ISPA in 2004. The award, previously known as the ISPA Humanitarian Award, was renamed in honor of Szekely's late son Alex, a tireless spa advocate and ISPA leader. Ms. Szekely was also awarded the 2010 ISPA Visionary Award. In addition, she serves as an honorary member of the ISPA Foundation Board of Directors.
